The position line occurs as line that may be identified two in the nautical chart or aeronautical chart and by observation out on the surface of the earth. A intersection of ii position lines occurs as fix that used inside position fixing to identify the navigator's location.
There are many types of position line:
Compass bearing - the angle between north & a line passing through the compass and the point of interest
Transit - a line passing through the observer & 2 more information points
Leading line - the line passing across both marks indicating the safe channel
Leading lights - the line passing across 2 beacons indicating the safe channel
Sector lights – the lines created by disguised colored lights that suggest the safe channel
